Think ASG and Over the Hump Are Making Real Racers
When I ran into Tom Spiegel, of Team Big Bear, and Perenial Mountain Bike Promoter of the US Cup, he said, “Thank you, we’ve never seen so many new racers starting racing. Over the Hump is the perfect entry to the race scene”.
Meet Daniel Johnson. Daniel has biking in his blood – his mom (Victoria) and dad were pro mountain bikers in the ‘80’s and Daniel was using wheels more than legs by the time he was three. His two wheeler blood took him into the BMX scene, unfortunately interrupted by a serious injury in his early teens….and here is where the Over the Hump (OTH) spirit kicks in.
In December of 2011, it was time for rehabilitation. Neighbor Mike Benedict of the thinkASG/Two Wheels One Planet (tASG/TWOP) team encouraged Daniel to try mountain biking and the proverbial hook was set. Daniel started riding with Mike, and by the time May 2012 rolled around, was ready to put his name behind a OTH number plate. The next thing Daniel knew, he was experiencing the OTH theme of family and fellowship in a way he never expected, surrounded by the red and black adorned riders of thinkASG/TWOP – and pretty soon those same riders figured out Daniel took the mantra of fitness to heart, as he quickly moved to the top ranks of his class, earning 2nd place for the season.
To those of us on the thinkASG/Two Wheels team, this is our “little Daniel” (in
deference to his team-mate super sport elder Daniel Jordan). To the rest of the OTH
world, you are looking at a high school freshman superstar, aimed at the National
title, planning to go for the five rings in 2016, and whom I am sure we will
ultimately see on a skinny tire rig in the Tour la France.
So what’s the moral of the story?
– Mountain biking is safer than BMX!?
– Over the Hump is a great place to start a mountain bike career
– Family, fellowship and fitness, the Over the Hump themes, truly matter
It’s an event for all ages, come on out and meet Daniel – you never know, he might
be on the course that week…his zeal for the sport is infectious, and his autograph is
going to go up in value exponentially!
