Race = Fun. Not your first time, right? We changed that at Over the Hump…now Mountain Bike Racing is fun for the First time?
At Over the Hump YOUR FIRST RACE IS FUN
FIRST TIME RACERS or JUST FIRST TIME RACING OVER THE HUMP.
…THIS IS WHY WE RACE IN THE FIRST PLACE….. NO ONE IS TOO COOL, TOO SLOW, OR TOO RACE READY FREDDY TO VISIT us at the OTH Docent Welcome New Racer Tent.
Don’t be shy, this is not “Beginner Only Program”. We simply want to say hi, and help you have the best possible experience ever.
Introducing The OTH Docent Ambassador Program
We’ve got some awesome volunteers and core community members that are ready to be your Docent. So come on down to the race on Tuesday Nights this summer and jump in with both feet.
Here’s the OTH Docent Program works:
WE’LL SEND A WELCOME EMAIL to first time racers to Over the Hump.
WHEN YOU GET HERE…COME BE MET!
Come as early as 5pm to the tent with a flag next to it that says “WELCOME NEW RACERS”. You’ll meet some of the coolest and most welcoming people at OTH… the Docents are there to make sure you have as fun as they do…because they love OTH, and want you to enjoy it.PRE-RIDE THE RACE COURSE WITH YOUR NEW OTH DOCENT FRIENDS!
**(Did we mention that OTH Docents also race, so they’re out on the course during your race experience to make sure that our whole community of racers remembers and exemplifies why and how we race…for fun and friendly competition…nothing more/nothing less.
AFTER THE RACE COME GET A TACO OR BEER ON US:
Come by the Welcome New Racers tent, and let us know how your race was.
BONUS: if you had fun and want to invite a friend for the next week and we’ll buy you both a beer or a Wahoo’s Dinner next week.
THE AFTER-RACE-PARTY IS THE BEST PART OF OTH
Some of our best friendships have been formed, with the dirty faces, and sweaty hugs.
YEP you’ve pedaled, you’ve earned it…now let’s get serious about hanging out! After the race, stick around and enjoy the connection with racers. Your OTH Docent will will plan on meeting you and introducing you to some other riders,

Is it gonna be hard to race, or scary?
Yes. I’d totally be lying if I told you there won’t be any PRE-RACE BUTTERFLIES. Anytime you do something new it can be scary. And if you push yourself to go your fastest and best it will probably be hard.
But hey, have you ever done anything worthwhile that’s wasn’t a bit scary or hard at the beginning. The good thing is you’re not alone. Over 5,000 different racers have entered the gates of Over the Hump over the past 9 seasons, and you’re no different than anyone else.
Every Person you see racing had to start too…the difference is the Over the Hump racers and family ACKNOWLEDGE AND LEAN INTO THE FACT THAT AT ONE POINT WE STARTED, AND OUR FRIENDS NEED A PLACE TO START TOO.
We’re here to make OTH Awesome for your too.
Here’s the great news: Over the Hump is designed with you in mind:
- We have more signs, course markings, and people to help than you’d expect. You don’t have to go it alone….from the parking lot, to registration, to race course markings, we’ve got the directions you need to make it fun and intuitive.
- The courses are manageable for any level racer…Beginner to Elite…there’s a course variation for you.
- No huge elevation gains or gnarly technical sections
- We separate the course at places, to allow for the newest racers to have the best course, without being overtaken by faster riders
You don’t have to drink the Kool-Aid before you’re one of us…simply by showing up, you’re part of the Over the Hump Tribe….you already are, you just need to get here, so we can give you the benefits of being one of us.
So get ready for the best community (and race experience) of your life. Over the Hump has changed hundreds of lives from “Ground Hog Day – same ole’, same ole’ to living the best day of their week every Tuesday Night at Irvine Lake.
