Improvements planned for Sept 15 Over the Hump
It’s been great to hear from each of you on what went great and what we could use some improvement on. Over the Hump Mtn Bike Race Series is YOUR race, and we envisioned that from the very beginning…
Over the Hump was designed to be a fun place to build the mountain bike racing of Orange County/Southern California, and give beginner through expert riders a local race, midweek in a laidback, fun, family friendly environment, around a competitive race. FUN remains the key word. No sanctioned race bodies, no 30 page rule book, and no difference in the way the community treats race celebrities or new racers. Grassroots, fun mountain biking is what John and I hoped for…thanks for being a part.
We’ve received hundreds of emails, both encouraging the midweek race idea and telling us what was a “killer component of the race experience” along with the “great job…but, if you could fix this I’d be stoked” emails. No nasty ones, and we appreciate the grace, as it was our first race at our Irvine Lake course. However the constructive comments have led to some marked improvements; here are 3 (there’s actually several more that will make the experience better, but we want to inform you not make you feel like you’re actually in those stinky port-a-pots at the finish):
- Stage launch was too big, how about smaller?: Yep, it was. We’ll have 5 stage launches next race, breaking the traffic into smaller groups.
- Course was dusty, can we hit it with a water truck before the race: Bye, bye dust boogers, and mud coughs (it is mountain biking), but of course we’re all civilized outdoors-men/women in OC, right? We know you have to breath to live. Thanks for the suggestion!
- Can we have food at the race?: Come hungry, race, then sit and have a burger or chicken sandwich with all the families and racers. Stay for the after race festivities, which will all on-site: BBQ, raffle to benefit Project Rwanda, race winners for September 15, 2009 announced, and the Series Finalists will be awarded prizes from our sponsors, along with the Over the Hump Mtn Bike Race Series winners’ trophies.

How long before race will water truck drop. Will I need mud tires?
