When we think of our favorite Over the Hump memories, the story revolves around an early Summer escape from work or school, a hot flash around Irvine Lake, and too many names and faces to mention, that we love seeing every week. Saturdays during the OTH Winter series were different…but the same.

The weather was perfect, starting cool in the morning and 75 in the sun later in the day. Sponsors and exhibitors lined the Expo and our amazing trail crew (Evan, Matt Woodward, and Max) were out putting the finishing touches on the course. The new “Roller Coaster” section of the whoops was dialed and watered by our friend John Brewton who makes magic happen in the dirt, giving a fun flow to the beginner line, while the Pro jump line got sessioned by racers and RIP Bicycles testers all day.

Though only 3 races, the winter has definitely been embraced and experienced to the full by our seasoned racers. Even more exciting is that a big number of the winter participants were beginners and 30-60 racers weekly were here for the first time, to join your tribe. Frankly, we would not have shortened the summer series to 8 races, or expanded into a winter series without the opportunity 2021 COVID restart provided…I don’t really want to say “Thank you COVID”, but every cloud has a silver lining.

It was awesome to have Baghouse’s women’s elite champion, Kristin Smith, join our ambassadors welcoming new racers at the Racer Info booth pre-race to give them a high five and welcome them as they came in for the initial OTH experience, along with long time friend Ross Bennett. This experience, unique to Over the Hump attempts to make racing as approachable as possible, despite nerves and “never would I ever raced before” vibes.

Simple Green Leader Champions stood on the podium Saturday after the 3 race series.  35 classes and Small and Large Teams celebrated.  Congratulations to all the racers, their sponsors and families who were able to celebrate with us.
